Sustainable Wood Recovery Initiative (SWRI)

Sustainable Bioproducts Program faculty manage the MSU Sustainable Wood Recovery Initiative (SWRI). The SWRI is a model recovery and repurposing supply chain system for trees removed from MSU for the development of value added products that provide economic, environmental, and social benefits to MSU communities.

The SWRI conduct outreach and education for the broader communities through partnerships with local organizations such as the Arboriculture Society of Michigan (ASM), the Michigan Forest Foundation (MFA) that are involved in urban wood harvesting and processing. Our programs have reached MSU students, faculty, staff and MSU alumni organizations, local high schools and middle schools, local artisans, and consumers across Michigan and the USA. The program has a product line branded as “MSU Shadows Collection.” Consumers can connect to their MSU experiences and cherished memories through these heirloom-quality works of art.
