    Red Delicious and Golden Delicious harvest is finishing up. A bin shortage is still hampering harvest. San Jose scale is showing up on fruit in a few orchards.

    Varieties such as Empire, Jonagold, Golden Delicious and Mutsu are being harvested this week in the West central region. Red Delicious and Idared are moving closer to maturity. Northern spy are still immature.

    Fuji, Goldens, Red Delicious and IdaRed are the focus for harvesting now in southwest Michigan. ReTain use for stop drop control seems to be more common this year as larger yields, bin shortages, and less labor available for harvesting are anticipated.

  • Callus tissue versus moldy core in apples

    Moldy core is a disease that develops in the locules or seed cavities of fruit. Do not confuse it with other internal tissue, which sometimes forms in the locules of certain varieties.

  • Northwest Michigan apple maturity report – September 28, 2022

    Report #4. Growers are waiting for the rainy conditions to move out to get back into the orchard to continue harvest. The rainy weather has slowed harvest and slow apples to color.
