Location: MSU Tollgate Farm & Education Center, Novi, MI
Join us for a fascinating journey into the past as part of the 2025 Michigan Forest Forensics Series! This year’s Oakland County hike will be hosted at the beautiful MSU Tollgate Farm & Education Center and led by Bill Eisenman, Tollgate’s longtime Educational Program Leader. With years of experience and deep knowledge of the land, Bill will guide participants through a hands-on exploration of the farm’s forested landscape, uncovering clues that reveal its ecological and human history.
🔍 What is Forest Forensics?
Forest Forensics is a way of reading the landscape to understand how it has changed over time. Developed by ecologist Tom Wessels of Antioch University, this approach uses evidence found in the forest—such as tree species, stumps, stone walls, and terrain features—to tell stories of succession, weather events, human activity, and geological shifts.
🌿 What to Expect
During this two-hour hike, participants will:
- Learn how to identify signs of past land use and natural disturbances.
- Discover how Tollgate’s forest has evolved over time.
- Engage with the land through observation and discussion.
- Enjoy a guided experience tailored to both curious newcomers and seasoned nature enthusiasts.
