October 3, 2023 3:30PM - 4:30PM

Natural Resources Rm 225

Michigan’s Forest History

In the 1830s, it was estimated that Michigan had enough pine to cut for hundreds of years. Just 80 years later, the state was almost entirely clearcut. By the 1930s, clearcutting, wildfires, and a depression had wreaked havoc on the state’s people and land. Learn how Michigan’s forests fell, about groundbreaking experimentation at Michigan’s first nursery, and how the monumental work of the Civilian Conservation Corps transformed a broken land and economy.
