The Importance of Amazon Forest-Climate Feedbacks for Earth’s Future

The Amazon forest plays a vital role in cooling the Earth’s atmosphere. Droughts caused by
climate change are contributing to Amazon forest degradation, however, threatening this role
and the region’s rich biological and cultural diversity. I’ll share my research on the Amazon
forest’s resilience (or sensitivity) to these pressures: My lab has investigated canopies’ climate
responses and impacts at multiple scales, sometimes measuring leaves 100+ feet above the
ground, often employing innovative remote sensing approaches. I’ll conclude outlining next
steps for integrated interdisciplinary forest-atmosphere research and education, advancing
MSU leadership in evidence-based tropical forest management against climate change.
