Position Description

The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, Washington invites applications for one full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor (100% FTE, 9-month appointment) working in the area of Ecological Restoration and Management. The position is anticipated to start in September 2024,negotiable within reasonable bounds. We aim to add to a diverse and inclusive faculty that advances and transforms research, teaching, and community engagement across allied disciplines within the College of the Environment, UW, and the multiple communities that we serve. SEFS seeks a faculty member in ecological restoration and management to contribute to our vision of inspiring and providing equitable solutions to pressing sustainability challenges as highlighted by the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration. Scholars engaged in ecological restoration and management monitor and assess ecosystem condition and change over time, and develop and evaluate methods for effectively, efficiently, and equitably designing and managing terrestrial ecosystems that are diverse, resilient, and adaptive to climate change, disturbance, and other environmental and human impacts. Faculty in this area could focus on any terrestrial ecosystem(s), including but not limited to urban, wetland, forest, rural, wildland, and alpine, and could work at multiple ecological scales. There are clear and direct opportunities for meaningful collaborations with local to international organizations, including Indigenous communities and other partners.

The position will complement our existing strengths and contribute to teaching needs in the Environmental Science and Terrestrial Resource Management major, including options in Restoration Ecology and Environmental Horticulture, Sustainable Forest Management, Natural Resources and Environmental Management, and Wildlife Conservation, the Restoration Ecology minor, and graduate teaching. At UW, all tenure-track faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The successful applicant will be expected to establish and maintain an active agenda of scholarly pursuits including externally supported research and creative and/or professionally-associated practice. The successful applicant will also teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, and participate in service activities within UW and/or amongst the communities of their academic peers and partners.


Salary Range: $94,500 - $112,500 (per the 9-month appointment). Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance, a relocation incentive, and/or limited commitment of summer salary in the first year.

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in a field relevant to ecological restoration and management. Applicants must demonstrate experience in and/or potential for an academic career at a national/international level with an active program of research and teaching, and work related to outreach and engagement on issues of social justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
