Student Researcher Opportunity: Sustainable Forest Products White Paper for 9th American Forest Congress

American Forests is hiring for a Fall 2024 student (or recent graduate) researcher (remote) in collaboration with the Steering Committee of the 9th American Forest Congress to lead the research and writing of a white paper on Sustainable Forest Products to contribute to climate mitigation and increasing equity. The 9th American Forest Congress seeks to establish a unified vision and trajectory for the US forestry community to identify cross-cutting approaches to increase and diversify forest management and protection solutions. The Steering Committee for the Congress—represented by leading forestry NGOs, academic institutions, and intertribal organizations—will lead a series of workshops and dialogues in the spring of 2025 to develop a set of consensus-driven, foundational resolutions for the US forestry community. To underpin these discussions, the Steering Committee is student researchers to develop 8-10-page White Papers that will provide a succinct, accessible foundation for the Spring dialogues and workshops.

Note: The researcher for the Sustainable Forest Products white paper will work under the supervision of Sandra Lupien, Director, MassTimber@MSU at Michigan State University (masstimber.msu.edu), and work closely with the researchers on the other white papers, as well as the Steering Committee members to develop the Sustainable Forest Products white paper. Work will include synthesizing key scientific papers and white papers to scope potential opportunities, risks, and current initiatives associated with Sustainable Forest Products.

Interested students (or recent graduates) should contact Sandra Lupien at lupiensa@msu.edu by September 12 to learn more about this opportunity.

Benefits:

  • The student researcher will serve as an independent contractor to American Forests and receive a stipend of $10,000 paid in installments over the course of the project period.
  • Hybrid/remote work possible and preferred.
  • Opportunities to continue engagement with Congress development into Spring 2025 and at the Congress (July 2025).
  • Building network and connections with staff at leading forest sector entities including American Forests, American Forest Foundation, Intertribal Forest Council, National Association of Foresters, National Forest Foundation, The Nature Conservancy, Society of American Foresters, Sustainable Forestry and Land Retention Project, Youth4Nature, and 1t.org.
