Temporary Wildland Fire
Hiring Organization:
USFS
Employment type: Temporary
Job Location: Huron-Manistee National Forest
Application Due Date: August 9, 2023
Hiring Information
The Huron-Manistee National Forest (HMF) is filling multiple temporary wildland firefighting positions for the 2024 fire season. Openings are available at the GS-3 (entry level), GS-4 (six months experience or education) and WG-5 levels (heavy equipment helper). The anticipated employment period for these positions is from mid-March 2024 to early September 2024. The Huron-Manistee National Forest is responsible for fire suppression on over 1.5 million acres of public and private lands. The fire program consists of 7 engine crews and 5 dozer crews as well as a type 1 Wildland Fire Module (WFM). Fire activity on the forest is highly dependent on weather patterns with firefighters responding to 150+ fires during dry years. The forest has an active prescribed fire and fuels program as well, keeping our firefighters busy with burn preparation and implementation and mechanical fuels projects utilizing masticators, heavy equipment, and chainsaws. HMF firefighters work closely with local Volunteer Fire Departments, the Michigan DNR, Michigan Agency Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the National Park Service while responding to wildland fires across the state and nation.
