The Huron-Manistee National Forest is filling multiple temporary wildland firefighting positions for the 2023 fire season. Openings are available at the GS-3 (entry level firefighting) GS-4 (one year experience or education) and WG-5 levels (heavy equipment helper). These temporary positions have a maximum 60-day work schedule but are a great way to gain initial employment and experience in wildland firefighting. The anticipated employment period for these positions is late spring/early summer. The Huron-Manistee National Forest is responsible for fire suppression on over 1.5 million acres of public and private lands. The fire program consists of five type 6 fire engines, two type 3 engines, five dozers and a type 1 wildland fire module (WFM). Fire activity on the forest is highly dependent on weather patterns with fire occurrence ranging from less than 60 fires on a wet year to more than 150 during dry years. The forest has an active prescribed fire and fuels program as well, keeping our firefighters busy with prescribed fire preparation and implementation and mechanical fuels projects utilizing masticators, heavy equipment, and chainsaws.
