Description

This position will assist a team of researchers and graduate students with multiple projects throughout the summer. This will include fieldwork in an old-growth forest plot in Washington State, long-term experimental thinning plots across NW Montana, and at various other field sites. Work may also include data entry/analysis on the University of Montana campus in Missoula, MT. Fieldwork involves measurements to quantify the effect of forest density and climate on long-term forest trends. Data collection includes locating plots/tagged trees, as well as measurement of forest structure, tree demography, and fuels. This work can be remote and may require front-country camping (near a vehicle) for up to 12 days. Temporary housing will be provided during hitches for sites where it is available. This is a fantastic opportunity to spend time in the forest ecosystems of Montana, build/refine ecological fieldwork skills, and contribute to a unique long-term study.

Duration

May 15th through mid-August 2024. End date negotiable based on candidate availability. The general work schedule is four 10-hour days per week with flexible sequencing and scheduling to accommodate logistics associated with working in remote locations.

Pay: $17.00 - $19.00 per hour based on experience.

Required qualifications

Ability to work safely in challenging environments and follow complex protocols. Candidates must demonstrate the capacity to solve problems, working independently and in teams. Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to get along with others is essential. Must be comfortable working in all weather conditions and in areas with no cell phone or internet service for extended periods of time. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license.

Desired qualifications

Experience with forest measurement tools and off-trail navigation using map and compass. Motivated applicants will be considered regardless of ecological fieldwork background. On job training will be provided to the level needed.
