2023 Animal Science Camp Day 5
Tie Dye day!! Happy Friday
Welcome to the fifth and final day of Animal Camp!!
Tollgate Scavenger Hunt
Did you know the history of Tollgate? Campers were shown photos of Tollgate and asked questions. They guessed which building the picture is. They saw a photo of the Farmhouse and Lower Barn Field. Campers went up into the silo near the conference center, connected to the upper barn. EDU Leaders talked about how long Tollgate has been around because of “stewards” who love and take care of the farm!
Tag you’re it!!
Campers played a version of freeze tag called the bacteria game. Two campers were either bacteria or a vaccine then the bacteria had to tag the other campers. The vaccine can unfreeze campers! Stewards joined in on the fun as well, campers had a blast!!
Ducks LOVE kale!
As an animal chore today, campers cleaned the duck pen, refilled their pool and then put kale in it! They absolutely loved swimming around looking for kale. Now their pen is all clean for the ducks to enjoy.
Garden Kitchen: Mixed Berry Smoothie & trail mix
The weather is hot, so campers made a yummy mixed smoothie with strawberries, blueberries, mango, peaches, yogurt, and oat milk! They really enjoyed it. Later the campers got a traveling snack which was trail mix!
Bug hunt
Down by the pond there’s a lot of critters roaming around. Campers had butterfly nets and a little container to catch their bugs. They learned that the bugs we find near a pond are different if we’re in the forest or in the city.
Farm Olympics
The campers got very competitive today during our Olympics! They got to do a sack race, egg carry but it was a golf ball, and lassoing a toy horse with a hula-hoop. Each pepper group split up into three teams then competed against each other. They had so much fun today.
Chicken/Rabbit Enrichment
It’s our job on the farm to make sure our animals are enriched. Campers made an enrichment toy for the rabbits made from a toilet paper roll, yarn and hay. Then they brought it to their pen to let the rabbits play with the toy! For the chickens, they got popsicles! A nice cool, refreshing treat for them to cool down in the summer!
STEAM Creature Creation: Presentation
Our creatures were finished today and then presented it to their group. They were given 10-15 minutes to show the creature they created. Then explained their name, where do they live, what animal is it based off, and what does it eat? It’s been fun seeing how creative the campers have gotten with their creatures.
Skits
At the end of the week, campers get to show parents what they’ve been learning at camp! They get really into it and act so well in their skits. The Stewards will narrate and be apart of the skit too! Before the skits, they were given popsicles while they finished up their skits before performing! We had so much fun this week with our campers. They learned so much!
