Mississippi State University a great source for natural resource enterprise information

Mississippi State’s Natural Resource Enterprises program is a national leader. Their director will visit Michigan to speak at a natural resources business workshop this August in Gaylord.

A natural resources business is a purposeful activity that involves natural resources on privately-owned land. There are many opportunities to develop those natural resources into a hobby or supplemental income source. Those businesses include activities such as small-scale maple syrup, mushroom production, trail riding, fee hunting and fishing, rural bed and breakfasts, wildlife viewing and more.

Use of natural resources by landowners on their property for financial gain while enjoying the land for many purposes is not a new idea. Mississippi State University is a leader in bringing together information about both the natural resource stewardship and business considerations on their Natural Resource Enterprises website and through educational programs.

Daryl Jones, coordinator of the program and a nationally-known expert on this topic will visit Michigan to speak at the Developing a Natural Resource Business: Opportunities for Michigan Landowners workshop on August 24 in Gaylord hosted by Michigan State University Extension. Jones will talk about how landowners in Mississippi are developing successful natural resources businesses, and how to get started with your own small-scale enterprise.

Even though Michigan’s climate and resources are different than in Mississippi, both states enjoy a rich natural resource heritage and opportunities for development. In many respects, the information and skills to start a successful natural resources business are the same regardless of location.

The Mississippi website includes excellent basic business information on how to start, manage and grow your business, and specific information regarding natural resource management. Short videos address legal issues, habitat and pond management, and native plants.

In addition to Jones’ presentation, the August 24 workshop will include a panel discussion by Michigan owners of successful natural resources businesses, help on how to get technical assistance, and an afternoon tour of local enterprises.

Registration is now open for the natural resources business workshop. The registration site also includes contact information and printable registration materials. The MSU Extension Natural Resources Enterprises web site offers additional Michigan-specific information about natural resources businesses.
