Jon Burley, PhD, associate professor in the MSU School of Planning, Design and Construction’s Landscape Architecture Program, traveled to Indonesia in November 2018 to speak at the International Landscape Architecture Student Workshop, which was held at the Bogor Agricultural University. Participating students were from Japan, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia.
Burley’s lecture focused on the fundamentals of surface mine operations and reclamation for sand and gravel mines, coal mines, open pit iron mines, phosphate mines and gold mines. Burley and other speakers received recognitions for their presentations.
“Students from all four countries were very talented, kind, and determined, just like so many great students from North America,” noted Burley.
The student workshop/competition addressed a gold mine in Java, which is soon scheduled for closure and final reclamation. Participants had the opportunity to visit the mine and see mine operations.
In addition to his lecture, Burley was also one of the jurors for the competition, as well as he played his electric guitar during the pre-social event time for about an hour before the gala event.
He also visited the Indian Ocean for the first time where he sketched with students from Indonesia.
