On May 13, a mandatory core review will precede in-person pesticide applicator testing at Glen Oaks Community College in Centreville, Michigan. Private and commercial core and the fumigation and aerial standard tests will all be available. No category tests will be administered. If you apply or supervise the application of restricted use pesticides (RUP), you must be a certified applicator. See “Which Michigan pesticide applicator certification do I need?” by Michigan State University Extension educator Eric Anderson for more information about applicator certification options. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) offers this testing in conjunction with Michigan State University (MSU) Extension and the MSU Pesticide Safety and Education Program.

Test day

Registration is from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Participants are strongly encouraged to register online ahead of time and can register here. Local MSU Extension educators Jeremy Jubenville, Nicolle Ritchie and Cheyenne Sloan will lead the mandatory 4-hour review from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Participants are required to attend the morning review session to take the exam. The cost of the review is $15. Payment can be made online at registration, with exact payment due the day of the event, or by check payable to Michigan State University.

This review covers all the chapters in the National Pesticide Applicators Certification Core Manual. Many MSU Extension county offices carry the core manual in English and some of the category manuals. Please call your county office ahead of time for availability. Manuals in English and Spanish can be purchased online.

A brief lunch will be provided following the core review. Participants should remain on the premises, as MDARD will begin testing at approximately 1 p.m.

Spanish exams are available but must be requested ahead of time.

Certification fees

In addition to the fee for the review, there are fees for certification: the private applicator certification fee is $50, the commercial applicator certification fee is $75 and the registered applicator certification fee is $45. Payment must be sent in by mail to MDARD with the application or renewal form following testing. Do not bring the payment for certification to the testing site. It will not be accepted at the testing site. Private applicator fees can be waived for Military Veterans if a copy of their DD214 is provided.

If you want to avoid in-person testing, remotely proctored computer testing can be done through the Metro Institute. You must register on the website before you can view or schedule testing. Category tests are only available online.
