Professor honored for mentoring

William Taylor is redundant – and he takes pride in it.
Taylor has for the second time been honored with the Mentoring for Professional Diversity in Fisheries Award by the American Fisheries Society (AFS) for his “outstanding contribution” to the fisheries profession by increasing diversity through mentoring and supporting students and professionals.
He also won the award in 1995 – and is the only person to receive the award twice.
Since joining MSU in 1980, Taylor, a University Distinguished Professor in Global Fisheries Systems in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife. has mentored hundreds of students – both graduate and undergraduates – helping them gain experience both on campus and across the globe.
Taylor has been active in the AFS, serving as president of the society, the Michigan chapter, and the North Central Division. Currently, he holds a U.S. Presidential appointment as a U.S. Commissioner (alternate) for the Great Lakes Fishery Commission. He is an internationally recognized
expert in Great Lakes fisheries ecology, population dynamics, governance, and management.
