Shortcourse scheduled to update cattle feeders in Great Lakes area

First session focuses on antibiotics, feed rations and genomic techniques; second session offers cattle market outlook, including the Holstein market.

The Great Lakes Professional Cattle Feeding and Marketing Shortcourse organized by Michigan State University Extension will start January 23, 24, and 25, 2018. Locations include evening sessions starting at 6 p.m. in East Lansing, MI (Jan. 23), Bowling Green, OH (Jan. 24) and Wyoming, Ontario, Canada (Jan 25). A day session starting at 10 a.m. will be held in Bad Axe, MI (Jan. 25). The second sessions will be held February 6, 7, and 8, 2018, in the same locations at the same time as the first locations. This is an annual event for cattle feeders and agribusiness professionals to learn the latest information related to feeding cattle in the Great Lakes region. Topics this year include reducing antibiotic use, feed analysis, rations and genomic testing for the first session. Many tools and technologies exist to assist cattle feeders and it is important to understand the implications of their use.

Cattle markets are continually changing and evolving with many facets that impact farmer profitability. The second session addresses current market outlooks, including the market situation for Holstein steers, and marketing strategies to optimize return on investment and minimize risk as well as results from the 2016 National Beef Quality Audit.

Speakers include professionals from Michigan State University and Michigan Cattlemen’s Association. The cost to register for both sessions is $35 for the first person and $25 for each additional person from the same operation. Students and youth can register for $15 each. Registration is available online or at the door.
