Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management Study

What is involved in this study?

Teachers who volunteer for this study will have the opportunity to be randomly assigned to one of two groups. One group will receive the Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management Group Training Program. A second group will serve as a no treatment comparison group and will be given the opportunity to request the Incredible Years handouts after the end of the study.


What is the Incredible Years Teacher Classroom Management Program?

This program is an evidence-based intervention focused on improving teachers’ skills in using classroom management strategies, handling child misbehavior, improving relationships within the classroom, and teaching students appropriate problem-solving and friendship-making skills. This program has been well supported within the research and has demonstrated effectiveness in improving teacher classroom management strategies, child behavior, and child social competence.

How long will this study last?

This study will be conducted over a ten-month period between September 2015 and June 2016. Data will be collected at the beginning and end of the study and the intervention phase will be spread out over six months. Teachers included within the Group Training will attend training sessions once per month for six months, each held on Saturdays (42 hours total across the course of the school year).

What will I get for participating in this study?

Teachers who are assigned to the IYTCM group training condition will receive a $10 gift card and State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCHECHS) for their participation in the data collection procedures and research study. Teachers who are assigned to the  control group condition will receive a $20 gift card for their participation in the data collection procedures.

When & Where?

IYTCM group, full-­‐day trainings will be held at the MSU Extension Office (775 Ball Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503) on the following Saturdays:

  • November 21, 2015
  • December 12, 2015
  • January 16, 2016
  • February 20, 2016
  • March 19, 2016
  • April 2016 -- Date TBD
