MSU Extension Agrifood Safety

Did you know that Michigan produce growers enjoy more on-farm produce safety support than growers in other states? The Michigan On-Farm Produce Safety Team provides FREE educational programs and farm visits through a collaboration between the Michigan Produce Safety Technician Program and members of MSU Extension.



The Produce Safety Technician Program (hosted through 6 Michigan conservation districts throughout the state) is unique to Michigan, and provides growers with support from friendly, knowledgeable (and did we mention FREE) local Produce Safety Technicians. Growers can request a farm visit to troubleshoot produce safety practices, or a Produce Safety Risk Assessment (or both) to help them identify and navigate their on-farm produce safety goals. No matter the size of your farm, or where it is in the state of Michigan, a Produce Safety Technician is available to provide free and confidential support. Many growers are familiar with the myriad of resources available to them through Michigan State University Extension. Some, however, may not be aware of the FREE FSMA/Produce Safety specific resources and trainings that the MSUE Agrifood Safety team is generating. Produce growers who are subject to the FSMA Produce Safety Rule (those that grow, harvest or pack foods that are typically eaten raw) can benefit from attending a FSMA Produce Safety Training or scheduling a FREE On-Farm Readiness Review!
