Teens must be at least 14 years old as of Jan. 1, 2026.

What:

Learn about MI 4-H Shooting Sports mission policy, risk management and safety, discipline-specific equipment use and care, how to teach shooting fundamentals to youth, range set-up, and more.

Objectives:

The 4-H Shooting Sports Adult & Teen Instructors Certification Workshop provides leaders an opportunity to:

  • Develop and improve skills in teaching shooting sports activities to youth.
  • Work toward certification to become a Michigan 4-H Shooting Sports certified instructor in a variety of shooting disciplines.
  • Learn how to develop, expand, and maintain local 4-H Shooting Sports programs.
  • Exchange ideas for local and State 4-H Shooting Sports programs with other leaders.

Why:

All MI 4-H Shooting Sports Clubs must have instructors who have been certified through an official 4-H workshop in order to offer live-fire, on-range shooting and archery experiences to youth members.

How:

To register, use the link below.  All volunteers must have completed the Volunteer Selection Process and have Active/Gold status prior to attending this event. This process takes place online in Volunteer Central and includes background checks, references review, video training modules, and an interview.

Individuals with poor or limited internet access may view videos at their county office by scheduling an appointment prior to April 11th with their county 4-H Staff professional. If your desired workshop is full, please select an alternate session.

Cost:

$150.00 - Registered adults that have completed the Volunteer Selection Process; 4-H teen volunteers and MSU Extension staff.

Persons canceling without a replacement after April 13th and those who do not show up at the workshop will be billed the full registration fee.

Certification requires full participation in both days of training and a successful completion of the training as evaluated by the Level 2 Trainers.

LODGING OPTION:

Lodging is not provided. You are responsible for payment of your room and all fees associated with your stay. However, lodging is available on-site at the Halter Shooting Sports Center's Cottages. The rate is $179 per night plus taxes. Please use the link Halter cottages to book your lodging. When booking, select the group code "12- 4-H Instructor Course" in the search bar.

MEDIA RELEASE/MEDICAL TREATMENT AUTHORIZATION: All teen workshop participants must complete the Media/Medical Release section of 4-H Online enrollment. Adults must complete this section in Volunteer Central. This authorizes MSU Extension to record and photograph workshop participants and to use these photos and voice recordings in educational and promotional publications and programs. Due to the nature of the high-risk activities involved in this workshop, please review your 4-H Online profile and/or Volunteer Central profile to make sure it is up to date.
