Oregon leads the nation in Christmas tree production and sales. The Christmas tree industry is highly competitive, with many issues in need of further research, and many growers in need of educational opportunities. The Department of Forest Engineering, Resources and Management (FERM) in the College of Forestry (COF) at Oregon State University (OSU) invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor Extension Specialist in Christmas Tree Production.
Seedling survival, effects of changing climate on tree survival and quality, disease problems, insect damage, nutrient management, seed orchard development, progeny testing and new species evaluations are all priorities of the industry, as are marketing, labor issues, and tree keepability. An Extension Specialist will be responsible for developing and delivering educational programs for existing and new growers, dealing with a host of issues deemed relevant by the target audience.
The specialist will focus on their areas of specialization, and also interface with other researchers and Extension specialists to foster a comprehensive program in Christmas Tree research and Extension. Specialties could include physiological ecology, silviculture, horticulture, genetics and biotechnology, entomology, pathology, or weed science. The specialist must interact with a wide variety of people and organizations, such as the state, regional, and national Christmas tree associations; state and federal agencies; Extension agents in Oregon and surrounding states; individual growers and suppliers; nurseries and nursery associations; and other specialists.

• Provides statewide leadership for the Extension Christmas Tree Program.
• Assess needs of intended audiences and use results to focus program development efforts. Assessment methods could include combinations of focus groups, surveys, evaluation of secondary data, key informant interviews, and other techniques purposefully implemented to gain a clear understanding of audience needs.
• Design, deliver, and evaluate non-credit educational programs and events, such as classes, workshops, short courses, seminars, field tours, webinars, web-based instructional modules, videos, etc. on subjects important to clientele. Utilize technology to increase the impact of program delivery, including participating with Ask-an-Expert and providing updated educational content to the KnowYourForest.org website in collaboration with the Partnership for Forestry Education.
• Create, review, edit, and update appropriate Extension education materials that serve the needs of clientele. These could include Extension bulletins, magazine and newsletter articles, websites, blogs, videos, and other social or mass media content.
• Use multiple methods of electronic communication and social media (i.e., web sites, publications, video conferencing and other online methods) to collaborate internally and externally as appropriate.
• Implement fee-based programming and cost-recovery practices, develop partnerships, and solicit external funding to support and enhance educational programs.
• Contribute to the maintenance of the existing FNR core curriculum and development of additional modules to the core curriculum, in cooperation with other Extension colleagues.
• Organize and maintain program advisory and management committees or networks to identify program needs, make recommendations, assist in program implementation, and evaluate program effectiveness.
• Participate in professional development opportunities that are appropriate for the current assignment and specialty.
• Supervise student employees, volunteers, program assistants or others to expand program capacity.

PhD in Forestry, Horticulture, Entomology, weed science, or other agricultural science field relevant to Christmas tree production. PhD completed by time of employment.
