Job Overview
The North Zone Forester will be stationed in Helena, and the HU Manager will be responsible for approval of time and other administration. The administrative line between the North and South Zones is Interstate 90. All trust lands north of I-90 is in the North Zone and all trust lands south of I-90 is in the South Zone, however, this boundary may be flexible for reasons of practicality. When the North Zone Forester is working in a specified unit (Dillon, Bozeman, Helena or Conrad), they will be working for that Unit Manager to accomplish the Forest Management Bureau (FMB) program goals and objectives in that particular Unit. The primary responsibility of this position is to manage and direct the North Zone’s forest management programs including timber sales. The position serves as the North Zone Lead Management Forester and is the specialist responsible for the development, management, and implementation of forest management projects within the North Zone counties (Gallatin, Park, Meagher, Broadwater, Jefferson, Lewis & Clark, Cascade, Teton, Pondera, Glacier, and Liberty) to generate income from the sale of forest products for the school trust funds in Montana. The position also performs secondary responsibilities in wildland fire management, special uses and lease management, and Forest Practices within the North Zone. The position reports to the Helena Unit Manager and does not regularly supervise other agency personnel.
Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities)
Forest Management Program Planning and Development
This position is the North Zone Trust Lands Trust Land forest management expert for all forest management program planning, project oversight, guidelines, standards and compliance within the CLO’s North Zone and is responsible for evaluating forest management program objectives, developing project work plans, researching new approaches and incorporating into program activities and procedures, monitoring and analyzing the nature, quality, health and status of forest resources, developing forest management proposals and conducting comprehensive program planning, determining multiple resource impacts, coordinating communication with other organizations and individuals, identifying and resolving program level problems and conflicts, administering forest management program budgets, and providing program and project level expertise and guidance to others within and outside of the work unit.
Forest Product Sales
The position is assigned responsibility for the development, administration, and oversight of forest product sales within the CLO’s North Zone . This responsibility involves reviewing, analyzing, and prioritizing data collection and analysis work products and needs; developing forest management proposals; soliciting comments and involvement from others; preparing or reviewing forest product sale schedules and plans; coordinating the design and/or implementation of silvicultural prescriptions, sale guidelines, logging system and other specifications, forest protection laws and rules, and road construction-related activities; developing and administering timber sale contracts; administering access acquisition activities; and responding to a wide variety of questions, concerns and input from the public, cooperators, other foresters and private entities as the forest management program manager. Typically, the position will perform project leader duties for the most complex, controversial product sales, but will also assign and coordinate the project leader responsibilities using other program staff as appropriate.
Forest Improvement
The position is assigned responsibility for the administration and oversight of forest improvement. This responsibility involves planning and conducting site regeneration activities, monitoring site conditions, and maintaining the long-term viability of CLO’s North Zone stands.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The required knowledge, skills and abilities are acquired through a bachelor’s degree in Forest Management or a related resource management field and 1-2 years of progressively responsible job-related professional experience in forest management.
The position requires extensive knowledge of forest management principles and practices; equipment and techniques used in forest management projects and operations; forest practices and hazard reduction laws, Administrative Rules, standards, guidelines, policies and procedures related to forest management operations and activities; and considerable knowledge of the Montana Environmental Policy Act and related laws and rules governing natural resource management. Knowledge of the terminology, principles, methods and approaches used in silviculture, ecology, hydrology, wildlife and fisheries biology. Specific knowledge of plant taxonomy, habitat typing, timber cruising, log scaling, harvesting systems, data collection and sampling techniques; road design and layout; fire behavior, fire suppression techniques, land surveying and timber appraisal procedures. The position also requires knowledge of DNRC and State Personnel policies, procedures, precedents, organizational structures, employment law conflict resolution and program requirements.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. A valid driver's license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.
