Are you a student who enjoys spending time outdoors and is passionate about the sustainable management of forest resources? Do you want real, “boots on the ground” experience working for a leader in responsible forestry? The Olympic Region of Washington DNR is seeking a summer intern who is eager to get out in the woods and be immersed in all things forestry on the Olympic peninsula. This position will provide invaluable experience in the many disciplines within forestry; timber sale layout, contract administration, road engineering, GIS, wildlife, hydrology, geology, and cultural resources. You will be in the field daily working with foresters, engineers, specialists, and loggers helping facilitate the sale and harvest of wood products from State Trust Lands. This position will be working in the forests near Port Angeles, Washington.

Duties

Responsibilities:
Assist foresters and engineers with the following:

• Timber sale layout and design
• Planning and designing forest roads
• Locating and classifying streams and wetlands following appropriate Habitat Conservation Plan or forest practices requirements utilizing field observations, LiDAR, and consultation with biologist and/or Forest Regulation forester
• Collecting data for timber sale boundaries, streams, wetlands, leave trees, roads, etc. utilizing GPS
• Scheduling and meeting with specialists regarding fish streams, wetlands, wildlife, unstable slopes, and cultural and historic resources.
• Fostering good working relations with the community and adjacent landowners by being transparent about DNR operations.
• Completing necessary permitting and paperwork utilizing applicable software and knowledge of standards, rules and regulations to create a timber sale document packet that complies with all procedures, policies, and state and federal regulations
• Compliance with road building and timber harvesting contracts.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

• A full-time student (12+ credits/quarter) majoring in Forest Management, Forest Operations, Forest Science, Silviculture, Forest Engineering or related field that will be returning to school in a following quarter/semester OR Graduate student.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:

• Assigned duty station may be a district work center, region headquarter office, or the Natural Resouces Building. There is also a large component of work done in an agricultural (open field) setting that may include working around agriculture equipment and large farm animals.
• Daily traveling to project locations should be expected as fieldwork is a regular expectation of this position. Overnight travel is limited but may be required if a project is in a remote location or if a learning opportunity includes visiting another region.
• A valid unrestricted driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
• Physically able to work alone or as part of a team in undeveloped, remote, forested or back-county landscapes and terrain in all weather conditions.

Desired Qualifications:

• Beginning knowledge of theory, policy, principles, and practices of the forestry profession
• Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office, Adobe, and ArcGIS skills
• Basic written and oral communication skills
• Candidates should have work or recreational experience driving on forest (dirt or gravel) roads.
