About the research/position:

The MSU Tree Physiology lab (Dr. Bert Cregg's lab) is seeking undergraduate research assistants to work full-time during the 2024 field season (May to August). Previous research or landscape experience is not required.

Successful applicants will participate in several projects related to nursery and Christmas tree research and establishment of urban landscape plantings. Research assistants will perform a variety of tasks both in the lab and in field settings on campus and farms across Michigan – 90% of our time is spent outside!

Field work includes plot setup, measuring plant growth, and data collection. Research assistants will learn to use instrumentation related to tree physiology (i.e., measuring rate of photosynthesis and plant water potential). Additional duties include nursery management, plot maintenance, and data entry.

Qualifications:

An interest in learning about landscape trees, nursery production, Christmas tree plantations and working outside
A valid driver's license
Ability to lift 40 lbs
Ability to work well independently and with others

What to expect:

Pay is starting at $15-16/hour, depending on experience
Schedule is Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30
Up to 40 hours/week is available May-August, and part-time is available during fall semester
This position can serve as an internship, if needed
