Onions, Molasses, and Apples, Oh My!

Farm Animal Camp: Day 4

IMG_5215Cock-a-doodle doo!

What better way to start the morning that listening to the Roosters crowing! Did you know that Roosters actually crow throughout the day, and not just in the morning? But we do associate that often with the start of our day, which our chicken visit was the start! We collected a good amount of eggs, and then the campers were able to pet the chickens, to feel the feathers and take a look at their feet, which resemble that of their ancestors, the dinosaurs!

Onions GaloreIMG_5221

Today we visited not the Educational Garden, but the CSA (Community Service Agriculture) Gardens, where MSU Tollgate grows a lot of our vegetables, including the ones that we pick today, our onions! We grow a variety of onions here, including really red and white onions that our amazing campers get to pick! WE learned about how onions grow from the ground, and how we harvest. Some campers even tried to eat the raw onions!

Talking about eating, we even got to feed our two horses on the farm, our permanent residents, Friday & Sesame. We gave them a mixture of chopped apples, carrots, celery, a few spoonful's of oats, and a dash of molasses to make it sweet as candy, then we took the giant bowl and put giant spoons of the snack it in the horse's pen, which they gladly came to munch on.

Hummus & TartsIMG_5211

Speaking of food this entire time has made me hungry! Good thinG our amazing Garden Kitchen was prepared with a lot of fun recipes to try! Today morning we had a White Bean Hummus, which apparently tasted very similar to the Black Bean Hummus we did for another camp. Everybody asked for seconds of that, because we couldn't stop licking our plates clean. The Tomato Basil Tart was also really rich in taste and finger-licking good!

IMG_5260Where's my Apple?

An identifying game, where you get an apple, and you have to look at all the different parts of the apple that make it uniquely yours. After finding unique things about your apple and writing down your observations, the apples were taken away and mixed up without you looking. Afterwards, with the knowledge you had about your apple, you needed to find it in the pile of other apples! We have some great sleuths.

After the clay creatures dried overnight, it is time to paint! Camper got to paint their clay creatures in some very bright acrylic colors. I saw a pink puffer fish, blue turtles, orange snakes and so much more being made! These campers have such great imaginations, it is so wonderful to see how they started with a drawing on pencil and paper, to now having almost a final product!

IMG_5250Bath Bombs

Our final activity of the day was making something that we could take home, which were our bath bombs! A lot of our products here such as soap and bath bombs are made with the raw ingredients we collect from the farms, including goat's milk, which we substituted with powdered milk. Campers got to add, mix and compress the ingredients into our lovely molds to make a working bath bomb you can use at home!
