Nature's Engineers: Day 4
Chickens!
What a morning! The chickens were really fun to do chores for today, and campers were really surprised with a crazy amount of eggs to collect! Our hens lay eggs every day, so collecting eggs is a daily occurrence, so it is always an activity for our campers to do. The campers got to see a variety of different colors that naturally appear on the eggs, including pink, green, and turquoise. The color is based on diet and the kind of hen laying.
Strawberry Spinach & Ants on Logs
Another amazing dish with strawberries, and spinach! Using these two ingredients, we made an amazing salad that the campers couldn't get enough of. Especially our Ants on Logs recipe! The campers kept asking for more, but we had to make sure there was enough for all the campers to try. A reminder: The entire week's recipes will be shared on a Saturday morning blog post, so keep your eyes peeled!
Hurricane Houses
It seems a whirlwind went through the workshop today as the campers rushed to complete their structures. Cardboard everywhere, tape rolls flying, and loud voices discussing the different ideas that they can do to make their houses even better so when we test it, the house will still stand. The campers are ready! We shall see how the Hurricane Houses fare.
Tomatoes
One garden activity we did today was to visit our CSA (Community Support Agriculture) gardens, where we grow a lot of vegetables and fruits and members of CSA always get fresh foods in season. Our campers got to see all the different kinds of ways we grow our tomatoes, from in the open air, or covered gardens. At one point, campers got to observe farm equipment up close, and learn about the tools our farmers use.
Scarecrows?
A thing that you would traditionally see on a farm anyways, each group of campers made one giant scarecrow for our gardens. We chose pants, a shirt, and a hat for them to wear, and made a head out of a pillowcase! The campers had a lot of fun stuffing the scarecrow with hay, then the scarecrow is ready to go!
S'mores!
We can't have camp without really delicious treats! S'mores are a traditional campfire snack, and today the campers got to make their own tiny "s'more maker', by taking a cardboard box, cutting a flap in the lid and covering that with foil, then putting their s'more inside the box on top of black paper to absorb sunlight, and a plastic wrap across the opening. Sunlight and the warm day made some very delicious snacks!
