Celebrate this summer staple with Michigan’s Cucumber Crunch.  Each summer, Michigan celebrates the delicious and nutritious cucumber harvest. This year, the celebration is going virtual and we invite you to join with a crunch event any time in August!!

Here’s how to get started:

  • Find information and resources from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and Michigan Department of Education, including a flyer, instructions for food distribution sites, and a quiz.
  • Read a new article by our MSU Extension partner, Mariel Borgman, about this summertime farm to institution celebration.
  • Use our Cultivate Michigan Sourcing Guide, Recipe Book, and promotional materials to plan and promote your crunch.
  • Source and serve cucumbers at your food distribution site or food service program. Cucumber slices are delicious on their own and easy to add to water, salads, sandwiches and more!
  • Share your activities and spread the word on social media! #micucumbercrunch, #cultivatemichigan

Did you know?

  • Usually available in July through September, fresh cucumbers are great sources of vitamins A and C and are rich in potassium, magnesium and dietary fiber.
  • Cucumbers are low in calories due to high water content.
  •  In 2017, Michigan ranked first in the U.S. for production of pickling cucumbers and third for fresh market cucumbers.
  • Sold fresh to be eaten immediately, slicing cucumbers tend to have thicker skins and are longer and darker green than pickling cucumbers.
