Splish Splash Water Camp: Day 2

IMG_5470Garden Time: Volunteers

Time to go to the Educational Garden and help our amazing MSU Tollgate Farm Volunteers! Today the campers got to try a whole bunch of different experiments all dealing with water in this Splish Splash Water Camp. From tapping glasses filled with water at different levels makes different kinds of sounds. Spinning two bottles of water together creates a funnel that helps the water go in between, and tossing water balloons is pretty difficult because the balloons like to pop!

Animal ChoresIMG_5462

Always a great way to start off our morning, the campers got to visit our chickens! These chickens of ours lay eggs, that we can collect to make dozens that people can buy. The campers got to collect a lot of eggs today and hold a chicken as well! Hens lay eggs almost every single day, so there are always eggs to collect from the chicken coup.

Since the morning was so active, we went on a small hike near our pond, to use our quite fox feet and owl eyes to observe our surroundings, what we see in the trees, as well as in the pond. While on this hike, the campers got to learn about the Riparian Buffer, an area near the pond full of plants, trees, and other shrubs that help filter and keep the water clean and increasing the quality of the water.

Panzanella & BroccoliIMG_5518

Another two amazing recipes to take home and try! Campers got to learn chopping skills today on our tollgate tomatoes and basil leaves on  our amazing Panzanella, which is a mix of almost all pizza ingredients, except for cheese! In the afternoon, the campers chopped some broccoli into bite-sized pieces to put in their amazing Broccoli Salad.

IMG_5512Common Water/Field

This is a really cool activity that visualizes usage of water over time. Each camper got a small cup and a sponge, with a bucket in the center  of all the campers. Following a storyline, depending on which label you were given, you either dumped you water back into the reservoir (bucket) or you added even more until it overflowed. By doing this we can visualize the usage of water over time, and answer the question: How we can improve our usage of water in the future?

Boats!IMG_5515

Just like yesterday, campers got to spend time thinking about how they wanted to make their boats, and today, it was all about finding the right materials! Campers get to make boats out of cardboard, popsicle sticks, aluminum foil, and straws to make their boat stable enough to balance and float on water when we test it by the end of the week.

IMG_5509Casting Practice

Casting spells? No, casting fishing lines! A lot of our camper who are returning, this was a breeze, but for our new campers learning for the first time, this is super duper fun! In the field that overlooks the pond, campers casted fishing lines onto the grass, aiming for colored hoops that were placed on the ground. By practicing this, the campers will be so amazing when we go fishing the next day!
