For the past few years I have been conducting interdisciplinary research in southern Turkana, this has comprised a mixture of ethnography, ethno-history, archaeology and visual anthropology. Most of my experience has been garnered in the south-eastern portion of Turkana County, where I have lived and worked with a range of communities engaged in different livelihoods. My research explores the very recent history of Turkana, using material culture to better understand broader socio-economic and political changes through time. In doing so, I seek to reframe various on-going dramatic transformations, including the discovery and continuing exploration of vast oil reserves, and to explore the longer-term processes of change and continuity that are articulated by them.
