Position Overview

Davey Resource Group, Inc., (DRG), is seeking to add a dynamic Environmental Technician / Inventory Arborist Technician to our passionate team of environmental professionals in this hybrid role. DRG provides a full array of consulting services in the areas of natural resource permitting and ecological restoration to clients in the private and public sectors throughout the Midwest.

This position will report daily to the office in Novi, Michigan. Periodic travel opportunities will be available, often requiring up to 5+ weeks of travel at a time. DRG environmental projects are based locally and internationally!

Job Duties

The Environmental Technician / Inventory Arborist Technician will provide our government, utility, commercial and not-for-profit clients with the services and solutions needed to efficiently and effectively manage natural resources, comply with policies and obtain regulatory permits. Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Understanding the contract needs and specifications of clients and their customers and develop appropriate solutions.
  • Inspect a wide range of habitats, both natural and disturbed, and assess their condition, health and functionality according to client specifications.
  • Identify local species, understand their typical characteristics and recognize common diseases and pests
  • Identify and measure local tree species, understand their typical growth rates and recognize indicators of common diseases and pest infestations.
  • Prescribe appropriate tree work needed to mitigate risk.
  • Other duties may include:
    • Inspecting, managing, and maintaining a wide range of habitats, both natural and disturbed.  Daily tasks may include native seed installation, native plug planting, tree/shrub installation, invasive species control, or other tasks related to habitat restoration. An interest in or educational focus on wetland, stream, and forest habitats, is preferred. Ability to identify native and invasive plants is preferred. Other duties may include tree inventories and surveys, tree health assessments, written arborist reports, and other tasks related to urban forestry.

Qualifications

Education and Qualifications:  

An individual must be able to perform each essential job duty consistently and satisfactorily.  The requirements listed are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Two to four year degree in Biology, Botany, Ecology, Forestry, Horticulture, Environmental Science, Plant Biology, Hydrology, Soil Science, Zoology or related discipline or equivalent experience in a similar position.
  • Driver’s license and clean driving record are required, a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required by project.
  • Natural resource consulting experience preferred.
  • Tree identification experience preferred.
  • ISA Certified Arborist credential or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire preferred.
  • Current Driver’s License and Driving Record in good standing.
  • Urban forestry experience preferred.
  • Proficient working knowledge of computers. Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, PowerPoint
