Description

To maintain the grounds of Applewood: The Charles Stewart Mott Estate.  

  1. Properly performs year-round horticulture duties required to improve and maintain the landscape of the Estate including: (a) Annuals/perennials, lawns, and shrub plantings; (b) Seasonal ornamental bed design and implementation; (c) Shrub borders; (d) Fruit and vegetable crops; (e) Hardscape; (f) Pools; (g) Fountains and; (h) Theme garden areas.
  2. Detects, researches, and implements the control of insects, diseases, and invasive plants with the most environmentally friendly practices available.
  3. Performs turf grass maintenance including mowing and applying pesticides and herbicides and fertilizing.
  4. Performs operational tasks such as snow removal, painting, cleaning, organizing, some equipment maintenance, etc.
  5. Directs and teaches seasonal and contracted staff on proper horticultural practices including safe and correct operation of all maintenance equipment used to perform required tasks.
  6. Directs and teaches volunteers proper horticultural practices including safe and correct use of hand tools needed to maintain the gardens and lawn areas.
  7. Collaborates with education staff by: (a) Assisting with creative development, support, and evaluation of Applewood’s programs. (b) Sharing expertise through creation and presentation of public workshops in horticulture and other related topics of interest. (c) Participating in event set-up and tear-down. (d) Providing horticulture technical assistance to grant staff, grantees, volunteers, organizations, and groups. (e) Leading guided grounds tours of Applewood and supporting other education functions.
  8. Participates in the development and implementation of the Ruth Mott Foundation’s Strategic Plan, Diversity and Inclusion, and other Foundation initiatives, as requested.
  9. Engages in continuing education to stay informed of advances in horticulture, community engagement, and computer-aided drafting software.
  10. Completes other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Associates degree or equivalent certificate in horticulture or related field.  
  • Minimum of five years of experience in horticulture field.
  • Michigan Commercial Certified Pesticide Applicator’s License with turfgrass and ornamental plant categories or must be obtained within one month of employment.
  • Ability to operate machinery and power tools required of the job.
  • Experience or willing to learn and operate equipment including power tools, hand tools, rototillers, front-end loader, tractors, skid steers, excavators, lawnmowers (push, riding, and zero-turn), etc.
  • Experience using computer-aided drafting software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.

Ability to travel up and down stairs and ladders; bend, stoop, and lift to move materials; to pull/push, lift and carry up to 55 pounds on a regular basis; and to reach both above and below shoulder height. The nature of the work requires the ability to work in both indoor and outdoor environments in varying temperatures and weather conditions.

Salary Description
$54,300 to $65,156 annually
