The Green Circle Growers Internship Program gives students majoring in Horticulture Programs the opportunity to work for one of the largest greenhouse operations in the Midwest. GCG is committed to introducing fresh new ideas to the marketplace while utilizing production methods that are efficient and environmentally conscious.

The goal of the Green Circle Growers Internship Program is to give students a hands-on experience in a large-scale greenhouse. Interns will work with experienced GCG growers and staff, who will guide and educate them throughout the internship process. Some areas interns will focus on are plant watering using Priva, biological control programs, insect scouting and recording, soft chemical applications, and much more. There is an opportunity for a full-time position upon successful completion of an internship.

The rate is $17+ an hour with on-site housing provided at no cost throughout the duration of the internship.

Job Duties:

  • Crop irrigation, including irrigation by hose, boom, and ebb and flood. The intern will learn when to irrigate and how to irrigate.
  • Interface with the environmental control system, Priva, to understand how to set up the greenhouse environment to maximize plant growth and energy savings.
  • Crop maintenance activities which may include moving plants or tables, spacing, and pinching.
  • Housekeeping activities, including cleaning greenhouses and removing debris.
  • Scouting crops to assess insect populations, including monitoring of yellow sticky traps.
  • Complying with safety regulations and maintaining clean and orderly work areas.
  • May be required to drive electric carts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled or Recent Graduate of a Bachelors or Masters in horticulture, agriculture, or related program
  • Must be able to read and speak English with good communication skills
  • Ability to assist grower in all growing relating routine tasks
  • Ability to scout for insects and diseases
  • Ability to understand and follow safety policies and procedures, including handling chemicals
  • Adaptable in a changing environment, as priorities change throughout the day
  • Able to work at a fast pace, with long periods of standing, bending, and sitting
  • Able to work overtime and weekends as required
  • Punctuality is required
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen

Physical demands and abilities: 

  • Production facility, occasionally outside, or in-store; Possible extreme heat and cold dependent on season
  • Continuously requires ability to follow verbal and written direction
  • Frequently requires walking, lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing and pulling (up to 200lbs), bending, and crouching
  • Occasionally requires sitting, standing, fine dexterity, climbing, and handling
  • May require ability to operate machinery, drive vehicles, or use equipment such as hand tools, computers, or general business equipment
