Job Title:  Garden Supervisor

Manager/Supervisor:   Executive Director

General Job Description: The responsibility of the Garden Supervisor is to plan, plant, maintain and harvest one-half acre of growing fields (½ acre of education garden, multiple raised beds, and flowers) and grounds beautification around the farm. This also includes maintaining and utilizing compost. Each responsibility area is broken out separately below. In this position as the Garden Supervisor, you will make recommendations to the Executive Director that will ensure NCF/Maybury Farm is meeting the needs of the community while at the same time working to stay within budget.

 

Note: 2022 MF will not be planting pumpkins but could reconsider in the future. Helpful if this person can help in the determination if the hay fields/pastures are ready for planting and/or mowing, etc.

Major Duties & Responsibilities: Farm Garden:

●        Determine what plants we would like to plant in the garden – Plant when the time is right.

●        Complete the layout so that all educators & camp team know where guests can go into the garden to use in education.

●        Interview or complete orientation for any employee or volunteers who want to work in the gardens.

●        Make recommendations to the Executive Director on what is needed for the garden so that we can purchase (staying within budget).

●        Determine what is needed to ensure that our apple/pear trees can produce fruit for use in camp and on tours in fall of 2023.

●        Work with the Master Gardener Program Volunteers in the gardens around the farm. Need to have a good-looking garden for the community to pick from.

●        Work with Barn, Farm, Maintenance Team Leads/Supervisor to ensure what needs to be completed by the volunteers throughout the week is completed to meet expectations for all volunteers and master gardeners.

●        Work with 4-H kids in the garden to help maintain the garden and educate them on how the garden will benefit all of us.

●        Help to establish a 4-H club at Maybury Farm.

●        In charge of Hay field growth and execute cutting, raking, and bailing with assistance from the farm staff and volunteers. On point for all things Hay. (Future Potential)

Farm Tours, Special Tours, and Event Enhancement towards education

●        Lead farm tours along with the other members of the educator team.

 

●        Follow the write-up completed by the Team Lead for Tours so that the educating team is consistent in the delivery of the message on all tours.

Meetings:

●        Attending all staff meetings and Maybury Farm events meetings as requested.

●        Attend all volunteer meetings.

●        Meet with any organizations that might need to discuss all things Garden.

Employee:

●        Prepare Timecards each day, showing the number of hours worked for each task performed. Make sure that the hours are totaled each day and a total for the week.

●        Watch the schedule to ensure that you know the hours you are to work. If you cannot be here for any reason, contact the Executive Director

Events

●        Work Events when requested.

●        Review all Project Plans for Events to ensure your tasks are completed and we are ready to go on Event Day

●        Make suggestions on any improvements MF to enhance our offers to the community needs.

Qualifications for Job:

 

High School Diploma

College Degree or work experience, preferred. Good Communication skills

Outlook/Google Docs/Excel/Word/PowerPoint Master Gardener, helpful but not required.

Garden planning experience (compost, soil amendment, planning, crop rotation, seed starting, planting, maintenance, harvest, and sale of product.

Knowledge of preparation for growing sites for compost receiving and putting gardens to rest after growing season, helpful but not required.

Hay knowledge and experience, helpful but not required. Garden Experience

Experience with Hay

Tractor experience helpful, not necessary Work well with people

Good at giving clear and concise instructions to employees/volunteers.
