Turf Specialist Intern Position Description

Reports to:              Grounds Manage

Term:                          Summer 2024: May 28th through August 30th (end date flexible)

When:                     Monday - Friday 6:30am-3:00pm (40 hours)

Function:                The turf specialist intern will receive hands-on training and perform specialized turf maintenance, athletic field preparations, turf, and soil sample evaluations, and maintenance on turf irrigation systems.

Duties:

  • Performs all phases of work pertaining to grounds maintenance particularly the specialized work including but not limited to turf and athletic field preparations (this includes field lining and measurement)
  • Maintains athletic fields and support equipment
  • Identifies problems of turfgrasses, (e.g. diseases, injuries, and pest infections)
  • Assists in game and event setup
  • Operates power tools and equipment including but not limited to lawnmowers, edgers, golf carts, pump/backpack sprayers, and leaf/trash blowers
  • Demonstrate knowledge of proper pesticide application with the opportunity to apply for a pesticide license
  • Participate in Arboretum project days which may have a horticultural or grounds management focus
  • Participate in all intern sessions as scheduled (typically trips/educational sessions and curator-led plant ID walks)
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • A strong interest in turf management and/or an academic background related to grounds management or a closely related field
  • Good organizational, management, and English communication skills
  • Must be able to climb ladders, bend, and reach and lift (minimum 30 lbs/maximum 50 lbs)
  • Must be willing to work in all weather conditions
  • Must be able and willing to work independently and as part of a team
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must have completed at least two years of college education (no first-year applicants)
