Research

Systems integration meshes ecology with socioeconomics, demography and other disciplines for ecological sustainability at local, national and global scales.

Researchers at the center and alumni working across the globe are connected by a powerful research web in the new field of coupled human and natural systems. This research seeks sustainable solutions that both benefit the environment and enable people to thrive.

Center director Jianguo “Jack” Liu uses the phrase “telecoupling” to explain the way an event or phenomenon in one corner of the world can have an impact far away. In effect, systems couple -- connecting across space and time. Telecoupling is the thread that runs though the center’s web of research.
