ERS Chair Activities

ERS Chair Activities

Food and Agricultural Policy covers a large swath of economic activity in Michigan and the United States. Inevitably, decisions need to be made about what issues to cover. Currently, chair activities emphasize production economics and related activity with an orientation toward matters of particular importance to Michigan.

One major theme is crop input-output relations, with emphasis on implications for society at large. Animal agriculture is also addressed, especially in regard to its connections with crop production (through land use and feed choices), with infectious disease risks, and with dairying. Another major theme is risk exposure and management in agriculture, where crop insurance choices are stressed. Questions here have largely to do with contract design issues or underlying empirical regularities relevant for contract design. The effects of farm activity on product retail quality and food safety are also addressed.

Chair activities also involve engagement with producers, consumers and policy makers through presentations, writing for trade journals, meeting participation, and also surveys and related activities. Some presentations that have been made are listed under the Presentations tab. Recent surveys have addressed land use, crop insurance and the dairy sector situation. Some outputs from these activities are listed under the Outreach & Surveys tab.
