Splish Splash Camp: Day 4
Canoes!
Today's the day we get to float on the pond! The campers got to put on their lifejackets, and before getting into the water, learn some serious safety rules about being in the canoes. Once in the water it was so much fun! Everyone took at least 3 laps around the entire ponds, rowing in circles, zigzags, and making themselves dizzy. A great time was had by all, and it was such a lovely morning to go canoeing too!
Bunnies!
One animal that doesn't really lay eggs, or give milk on the farm are our resident Tollgate bunny rabbits, Eleanor, Stella, and Bella. These bunnies are mainly there to teach our campers about being gentle, as well as learning how to care for a smaller animal. The campers have to sit in a circle with crossed legs to make a 'fence' so our bunnies can have a space to hop around while the campers are able to pet and learn about them.
Irrigation Systems (CSA)
How do you water a really big garden? By creating a water irrigation system of course! this time our visit to the Community Surface Agriculture (CSA) Gardens, we didn't talk about the things we are growing, but the systems and technology put in place to help our plants grow! The irrigation system spreads in a grid across the entire farm, and our campers learned how it makes watering plants super easy.
Pizza, Pizza, Pizza!
It is a very pizza themed day, with a Pizza Hummus that started off our morning, that the campers were really surprised about. According to multiple campers, the Pizza Hummus tasted EXACTLY like pizza, but without pepperoni slices! Crackers were the perfect pizza dough to spread the hummus on. In the afternoon with the rising heat, a refreshing Watermelon Pizza is always welcome to cool down. Using watermelon as the base, we added kiwi, blueberry, strawberry, and peach slices to go on top, to create a blend of interesting flavors that tasted really amazing.
Weeding, Watering, Skits
Back to the wonderful Educational garden, where we got to take care of our food that are growing and ready to harvest, like our beans and bell peppers. Some campers got to water the plants as well, and do a little weeding to help maintain the rows so that the plants can continue growing. Afterward, if there was a bit of time, the campers got to work on their skits for tomorrow!
Boats Away!
Time to see if the boat can float! Most of the campers are putting their final touches on details and some even were adding sails! It will be a sight to behold, each camper has a completely different design and idea that is unique to their boat. After completion, the campers get to put their boats in a water to see how they fare!
Water Games
This was a super fun activity for the afternoon where the campers got to learn about the different ways in which water moves and how water can expand to the same internal shape as the space it occupies. How many drops of water can you put on a penny? How many pennies to make the water spill out? If you put a paper towel into two different cups of water, which way will the water soak in and will it travel?
