Wild weather for Day THREE of Wild Animal Camp!

2022 Wild Animal Camp: Day 3

Blog 15

Week 2 of MSU Tollgate Summer Camp has officially started and all the campers are getting wild to learn about wild animals during the next five days of camp! With our Green, Yellow, Orange and Red Pepper groups, this summer camp is bound to have the best time ever! Let's take a look at what we did throughout our day one of WILD ANIMAL CAMP!

Again I would like to apologize in advance for the limited picture blog posts. Our Communications Leader is currently sick with COVID so we are doing our best with out her. But we can't wait to have her back!

Flag Ceremony

IMG_20220713_092500Every day of camp we kick off the day with a flag ceremony where the different pepper groups will present the flag. Today they yellow peppers did an amazing job presenting the flag. Looking forward to the green peppers tomorrow!

Although the weather was quite gloomy for this flag ceremony the Yellow peppers did a fantastic job to brighten up the day!

 Blog 25Track Trap Check

Off to the forest we go to check the Track Traps we laid out yesterday! What animals did you think would visit? Were you correct?

Lots of mice, raccoons, squirrels, and rabbits! Anything else?

What do you think they were up to?

Animal Chores: Chickens, Ducks, Goats, and Rabbits

Another day of animal chores! Today the green peppers were excited to have the opportunity to milk some goats! During this the campers learned about how to safely milk a goat, why we milk goats, and what is the job a goat on the farm. Then the yellow peppers headed over to the duck pen to visit the drakes and ducks, the orange peppers headed to the rabbits and the red to the chickens! In the picture to the right you can see the orange peppers enjoying some rabbit time and learning about why farmers might raise bunnies on a farm.

Garden Kitchen: Egg Muffins and Fruit Smoothie

Breakfast of champions! This morning Ms. Toni and the campers whipped up something delicious! Breakfast egg muffins with hidden cauliflower and spinach! Campers loved how easy and delicious these breakfast snacks were! Was difficult to stop eating them, they were so good!

And afternoon snack, we enjoyed a delicious fruit smoothie and then prepped some strawberry and peach jam to enjoy tomorrow!

 image (2)STEAM: Creature Creation

Creature creation today was painting our creature! Campers got creative with the colors of their mythical made up creature that they will present on Friday and then take home to share with their family! I can't wait to hear more about all these fabulous creatures and about their habitat and diet later this week!

Blog 28Fishing

Today is fishing day and the weather may be gloomy but I hear that is perfect weather for catching fish! The Green and Yellow peppers were the first two groups to go today! And wow did they catch a lot of fish. The staff and volunteers could not keep up with putting worms on hooks as fast as the fish were biting! I think we might have broken some Tollgate records for most fish caught total and by an individual camper. We had one camper today catch a total of 10 fish! And he was not alone in catching many.

I think weather combined with meaty worms and patient campers was our recipe for success today! Although not everyone caught a fish, all campers did a great job rooting for their team!

Blog 18Bats with Ms. Sarah

Today we hide from the rain a bit more with a special guest visit from Ms. Sarah to talk about bats! She shared with each camper group some fun facts about bats, their role, habitat, diet, and so much more! Do you know how many bugs a bat eats in a night?....

2,000!!!

Thats a lot of bugs!

The campers also got to play a game of playing Bat vs. Moth and how Bats are able to hunt for moths.

Did your camper remember any fun fact about Bats today?

 The End

Well that's the end day three! What new adventures do you think day four will bring?
