Puzzle pieces spelling democracy.

Welcome to the Thrive Local Blog. At Michigan State University Extension Center for Local Government Finance and Policy, we believe in ensuring that local democracy can thrive through the power of knowledge about finance and other related policy matters. Local officials and residents should have the information they need to make decisions in their best interest and for the common good. State and federal officials need awareness of the challenges, constraints and resources needs for local democracy to thrive.

In this blog, you will hear the voices of Samantha Zinnes, Mary Schulz, and Eric Scorsone as well from guest bloggers. We will talk about local democracy and government at the intersection of law, finance and politics. We will cover issues large and small and try to inform the readers of this blog of our take on how to understand complex financial and legal issues facing local governments. We may explore issues from the angle of legal constraints on local democracy or on new or old tools that can assist local government in addressing policy challenges. We will also explore how legislative actions that impact local governments need to be thought about, positively and negatively.
