Van Attas, an employee-owner company, is pleased to announce a position opening as Assistant Nursery Manager. We are looking for an individual with a strong work ethic, desire to learn, ability to adapt to changing work requirements and needs, and who shares a passion for horticulture and providing superior customer service.

Candidate will work closely with the current nursery manager to accomplish operational goals shown, but not limited to, those listed below:


Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Nursery Manager:

  • Oversee the care and maintenance of nursery stock, plants, shrubs, and trees on the facility grounds including pruning, trimming, and grounds maintenance.
  • Maintain high levels of inventory control, including accurate receiving, daily/weekly inventory counts, and minimize shrinkage through proper utilization of current inventory programs and horticultural practices.
  • Maintains irrigation system in a functional manner.
  • Direct and assist the staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement and spraying of trees and shrubs, and tending to high stress areas especially during the summer months.
  • Develop detailed annual plans for the seasonal rotation of plants, flowers, etc, in the facility’s various landscaped areas and flowerbeds.
  • Stay attuned with current fertilizer and pesticide application. Participate in the application of fertilizers and pesticides
  • Oversee the operation of mechanical and power equipment utilized in the maintenance of ornamental plants and trees.
  • Assist in the management of department members that may include, but is not limited to: landscapers, nursery workers.
  • Assure that effective orientation and training are given to each new associate.
  • Assist in developing ongoing training programs.
  • Assist in monitoring business volume forecast and plans accordingly in areas of manpower, productivity, costs and other expenses.
  • Incorporate safe work practices in job performance.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • College degree in Horticulture or related field.
  • Six months to one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong ability to engage, interact, and provide customers with exceptional customer service and follow-up.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
