CONSERVATORY AND GREENHOUSE TECHNICIAN

The University of Michigan, Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum is seeking to hire a full-time temporary (9 month, 2 term limited) Conservatory and Greenhouse Technician. This position will report to the Conservatory/Greenhouse Manager to support the development, maintenance, and management of living plant collections and natural areas in support of teaching, research, public outreach, and conservation goals of the U-M Matthaei-Nichols. Employment begins Monday, December 6, 2021 and ends Friday, September 3, 2022. This position is 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities

  • Work alone or as part of a team to maintain plant specimens and collections, assist with greenhouse operations and the stewardship of the Conservatory.
  • Grow plants in greenhouses and tending conservatory plants; plant, water, fertilize and assist with regular integrated pest management (IPM) and routine cleaning.
  • Lead student interns, student workers, and volunteers in maintaining plant specimens and collections.
  • Ability to lift or transport up to 40lbs.0

Required Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or higher in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a conservatory, greenhouses, or horticulture.
  • Ability to work in different conditions and tolerate the physical challenges of greenhouse work.
  • Previous knowledge or willingness to learn a variety of horticultural tools, equipment and techniques.
  • Hold a State of Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License or willingness to obtain one (Matthaei-Nichols provides study materials and may cover certification expenses)
  • Willingness to apply pesticides as part of our IPM.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with any of the following: Annual and native plant production, general plant propagation and maintenance.
  • Ability to use Excel/Sheets for the purpose of plant production. 
  • Experience with watering needs of different types of plants.
  • Previous leadership experience working with students and volunteers.

Additional Information

Compensation:  $15 per hour
