Harvest Internship Position

Shady Lane Cellars is an Estate winery in Northern Michigan situated in the hills above Grand Traverse Bay. We produce 6,000 cases of estate red and white wines over 65 acres of vineyard. Shady Lane is known for its cool climate white and red varietal wines. This winter and spring have been mild and we expect good yields. We are excited for an intern that is ready to gain a well-rounded winemaking experience.

Job Description:

The Harvest Internship Position will support in the day-to-day operations of fruit processing and wine fermentation during harvest. This position will operate under the guidance and instruction of the Winemaker with support from the Assistant Winemaker and the Vineyard Manager. This person should be dependable, punctual and ready to work alone or as a team. Effective communication as well as the ability to follow written and verbal instructions are imperative. Attention to personal and equipment safety is necessary. A willingness to work physical labor in wet, cold, and/or warm outdoor conditions is necessary.

Requirements:

  • Excitement to learn in a hands-on environment about wine grapes and winemaking
  • Good attitude, strong work ethic, and attention to detail
  • Available for 12-15 weeks starting in September
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift 50lbs
  • Ability to work long days and variable hours including weekends
  • Ability to work safely in a fast-paced, quality-focused environment
  • Ability to carefully follow written and verbal directions
  • Ability to take written notes and record data
  • Basic math skills

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Equipment and facility cleaning and sanitization
  • Fruit/berry sampling and fruit/berry analysis
  • Fruit processing (learning equipment operation and cleaning)
  • Fermentation monitoring and additions
  • Racking and transferring juice and wine via pump
  • Barrel work (topping, stirring, racking, cleaning)
  • Punch-downs of red fermentations

Equipment Used by this Position:        

  • Pumps
  • Harvest Processing Equipment (de-stemmer, must pump and press)
  • Ozone Generator for sanitizing
  • Pressure Washer
  • Forklift experience is a plus, but not required

Compensation

  • To be determined and based on experience. Overtime applies to over 40 hours/week.
  • Housing available if needed
