Intrinsic Internship

Intrinsic Perennial Gardens is a wholesale perennial grower selling mainly to landscapers and garden centers in the Chicagoland area.

Pay Rate: $13.00 per hour.

Benefits: Assistance to locate local housing and transportation. Visit other nurseries and garden centers. In a rotating schedule (see attached), you will participate in most phases of perennial plant production, scheduling, planning, merchandising, etc. and you will have contact with many people in the trade. Skills You Will Learn: Sowing seed, cutting, propagation, field growing, irrigation, over-wintering. Also may make sales calls, take orders and ship orders.

Job Details: Learn to collect and clean the seed of many unusual plant varieties using different screens. Help with seeding (broadcast seeding or in rows in flats), and stick cutting of 300+ varieties of perennials which are generally done under mist, in plug trays of 72.

Make cutting propagation and division. Prick seedlings, transplant plugs, and divide plants for potting into 4.5”, 1 gallon and 3 gallon containers. Assist with the transportation of plants to the growing beds or cold frames (hoop houses). Fertilize the container plants using a water-soluble fertilizer. Assist in pulling orders, which includes gathering plants in trays, cleaning, labeling and counting, then loading onto a truck or trailer. Assist in over-wintering plants (including covering growing beds and cold frames with foam or poly starting in November). Taking orders, checking and confirming availability of plants. If intern is interested, we will make some outside sales calls, which we generally do by loading our nicest plants and showing them to prospective customers.

Seasonal Schedule: Internships available April through September.
