Native Landscape Designer

The Native Landscape Designer manages the design and installation of native landscapes as well as promotion of the Wild Toledo program at the Toledo Zoo. Works with Wild Toledo and Creative Services staff to effectively market the Wild Toledo program through social media and other marketing channels. Responsible for the sale, design, implementation and management of Wild Toledo landscape installations. This position promotes and creates ecologically diverse and aesthetically pleasing native landscapes for a diverse range of clients including home-owners and commercial properties. Reports to the Wild Toledo Coordinator.

Native Landscape Designer responsibilities include:

  • Promotes, plans and executes Wild Toledo landscaping jobs at residential, government and corporate sites.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse range of audiences while promoting Wild Toledo programs.
  • Collaborates with Creative Services to promote Wild Toledo programs through social media, direct interactions and community activities.
  • Creates biologically diverse and aesthetically pleasing landscape designs that meet customer and mission goals.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of native plant species and able to conceptualize their use in landscape designs.
  • Ability to utilize landscape design software to design native landscapes.
  • Utilizes traditional landscape design principles in the planning and construction of native plant landscapes.
  • Works with the Wild Toledo Coordinator to meet annual sales and growth targets for the Wild Toledo landscaping program.
  • Participates, teaches and/or presents various educational programs and presentations for Zoo visitors, community and professional organizations to encourage the use of native plants in the landscape.
  • Performs public relations duties including speaking engagements, media interviews, conducting tours, fund raising events, etc. as required.
  • Works with supervisor and other Zoo staff to ensure the sustainability of Wild Toledo and other Zoo initiatives.
  • Directs and trains part-time and seasonal employees working on Wild Toledo landscape initiatives.

Minimum Training and Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, landscape design, biology or related field and three to five years’ experience in horticulture, landscaping or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Previous work with North American native plants preferred. Must have an Ohio commercial pesticide applicators license or the ability to obtain one. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires forty hours per scheduled work week. Must have a valid drivers’ license and insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
