Fall 2023 Undergraduate Research Assistantship
for
The David and Marion Dilley Mentoring Scholarship
Department of Horticulture, MSU

The David and Marion Dilley Endowed Scholarship and Research Fund was established to support scholarships, including recruiting scholarships and working scholarships, for undergraduate and graduate students in the Dept. of Horticulture. From this fund, the David and Marion Dilley Mentoring Scholarship was developed. This scholarship provides funding for graduate students in the MSU Dept. of Horticulture to recruit and mentor an undergraduate student for a one-semester research experience. The project for fall 2023 will be mentored by Manjot Sidhu (PhD Graduate Research Assistant, HRT).

Selection criteria:
1. Applicant must be a current MSU undergraduate (preferably Horticulture) student
2. Applicant must demonstrate an interest in the project on evaluating herbicide efficacy, absorption and translocation within the weed, liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) and determining differential response of liverwort tissue to herbicide applications

The award will consist of the following:
1. Undergraduate wages (approx. 5 hrs/week for 15 weeks)
(Note: If desired, the undergraduate mentee may register for research credits (HRT 492) in addition to receiving hourly wages)

Job description:
The successful candidate will be assisting in setting up, maintaining, and collecting data for research project on evaluating herbicide efficacy, absorption, and translocation within liverwort (Marchantia polymorpha) and determining differential response of liverwort tissue to herbicide applications. The candidate will be required to take radioactivity safety trainings at the beginning of fall semester, as the project involves the use of radioactively labelled herbicides. Applicant must be prepared to work in greenhouse and in the lab. In addition, the student will be required to prepare a brief research report as well as present the results at the MSU’s University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum (UURAF), 2024.
Working Timeframe, Hours, and Pay:
1) Start Date: August 28, 2023
2) End Date: December 15, 2023
3) Pay: $15 to $17/hour (based on experience)
4) Hours: Up to 10 hours/week Monday-Friday from 8:00am -5:00pm
