Nature's Engineers Camp: Day 3

IMG_4781Fishing!

We did practice casting our fishing lines on our first day of camp. Now, we put those skills in the water! Every group of campers caught at least 10 fish total from our MSU Tollgate pond. While fishing, we had an encounter with a very large snapping turtle that we named Felix, who was very happy that we were throwing the fish back into the water! What an adventure!

BeesIMG_4738

Today was a very special day, because we had a professional beekeeper who gave our campers some really amazing information about our honeybees that live across our farms. We learned that sometimes there can be TWO queen bees in one hive, as well as how they make honey and beeswax, and how many bees it takes! Bees are super vital to our farm process, because they help pollination for all our plants to grow.

IMG_4771Zucchini Pizzas & Taco Cups

We can't make just regular pizza here! We have to make something new and exciting! A zucchini slice was used for the base of our pizza, which turned it into a yummy and refreshing pizza! Taco cups were very well-liked, and we had an interesting ingredient which was our Sweet Potatoes!

Goats & BunniesIMG_4770

Yes! We milked our lovely goats, and our campers did such a great job! In all honesty, it is pretty difficult to milk a goat, but each week our campers do it so well, we think they're absolute pros. While one group milked goats, another group gave our Tollgate Farm Bunnies some company. Our two bunnies we brought to say hello, were our Lop-eared rabbit, Eleanor, as well as our lovely Stella.

With learning about nature comes learning about all the other crawling things that exist on our planet, which are bugs! We invited some bug professionals to introduce some to our campers, including a spider, scorpion, cockroach, and beetle! Campers got to view these little critter friends closely, or if you weren't keen on being close, you could watch from a distance. There were even some really cool displays of other bugs that you could see as well!

Games or Skits?IMG_4825

Since it was such a fun week, we want to prepare an awesome presentation for our amazing parents this Friday, so the campers got to put their heads together and come up with a really fun idea for a skit or a song to perform for their families. At one point, we had some real fun when we put two camp groups together to sing some really fun camp songs with one another!

IMG_4840STEAM Projects

Our hurricane houses are halfway done! the campers are really interested in this project, making the sturdiest homes that can withstand high winds. Our littlest campers got really invested in their project today, so much so we decided to give them more time to think about and create their Hurricane Homes. It was an awesome way to end our day, and we couldn't be more happy about all the amazing things that our campers accomplished today.
