Earth Explorers Camp: Day 2

Painting Rocks, Fishing, Dirt Cups, and more!

Earth Explorers Camp: Day 2

Remember we practiced casting fishing lines yesterday? Today we put our practice to the test, casting the worm bait into the pond! Minnows, Sunfish, and Large-mouth Bass are the three kinds of fish that all the campers caught today. Large-mouth Bass is the largest kind of fish that our MSU Tollgate pond has to catch. After taking a lovely picture with the fish, the campers, with help, were able to take the fish off the hook and release it back into the pond.

Dirt Cups & Curry ChickpeasIMG_4472

Garden kitchen always brings such tasty treats to try! We will have a full list of all the recipes sent out at the end of every week, and each camper gets 2 recipe cards of the meals we make every day. Dirt Cups are a mixture of yogurt, chocolate, and fruits all mixed to make a sweet treat, which was perfect to start off the morning. In the afternoon, we made Curry Chickpeas, which were chickpeas (aquafaba) mixed with curry powder, salt, pepper and olive oil, and roasted in the oven.

Today some groups got to go see ducks, and collect eggs from them, other collected eggs from our chickens, and then some did goat milking. It is always an important part of our day, because it helps our campers understand the importance of looking after and caring for different kinds of animals, especially the baby ones.

Rock PaintingIMG_4455

"Painting rocks?" you might ask. Well, there are lots of uses for putting painted rocks in a garden. A really good use of painted rocks is to paint them to look like the plants you are growing, such as strawberries, so when birds try to eat them, they get dissuaded from eating the strawberries. Our campers got to keep the rocks they drew or leave them in the educational gardens, where they also weeded and de-bugged our section of potatoes from potato beetles.

Another adventure in the forest! Today the campers set up forest traps which consisted of cat food, inkpads, and giants pieces of paper. Each group got put the  trap in an ideal spot where they think they will get the most "foot traffic" or the most tracks, and laid down the food. Tomorrow, all the campers will go back to see what kind of footprints they caught, and identify what kinds of animals reside in our forests

This part our day was all about thinking! Our campers had to invent a carnival game that they will make from scratch, and then play on the last day of the camp. There were definitely some very cool ideas, we can't wait to show you! Today was just about putting down the ideas, and by writing or drawing we can see if the game will work. Best of luck campers!

IMG_4480Games!

Since it was a hot day, it is very easy to feel tired by all the different activities, so our Educational leaders planned a time just for playing some classic Tollgate Farm games! One game was called Wrens and Jays, where you the Wren have to hide a cup (nest) and fill it with eggs (beans) and hide the nest in the Children's Garden where the Jay cannot see it, otherwise the Jay takes the cup, and you have to start all over again! The person with the most beans wins!
