IFLR congratulates friend-of-the-program Phil Tocco on receiving MSU Extension's 2025 Excellence in Teaching Award. In addition to his Extension responsibilities, Mr. Tocco teaches in IFLR's course on "The Law of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule." We are fortunate to benefit from his exceptional skill and innovative teaching in our program.

From the announcement:  Phillip (Phil) Tocco is an MSU Extension educator in Jackson County, focusing on food safety on the farm and supporting fruit and vegetable producers across Michigan. Inspired by Joseph Campbell's "The Power of Myth," Tocco's teaching philosophy emphasizes taking learners on a journey to find insights within themselves. He uses interactive exercises like the "three circles" to engage participants in understanding foodborne illness risks. To promote behavior change, Tocco employs tools such as a weekly harvest worker texting service and the "Daily DO" series of produce safety affirmations. His efforts show consistent increases in knowledge gain and adoption of new practices, demonstrating his impact on improving produce safety.

The Institute for Food Laws and Regulations (IFLR) at Michigan State University offers graduate degree and continuing education programs designed specifically for food industry professionals. All courses are delivered 100% online and asynchronously, allowing students to manage their studies alongside work and personal responsibilities. Students have the option to pursue a certificate in U.S. or international food law, or work toward a Master of Science in Food Regulatory Affairs. Some students begin by enrolling in a single course to address a specific challenge in their workplace and choose to continue their studies from there.
