Research Interests

As Garden Director, my interests are focused on the use of designed landscapes as they contribute to the well being of our society. This includes ornamental and food crops. I am particularly interested in landscape design styles that reduce the need for supplemental irrigation and fertilization. Herbaceous perennials and ornamental grasses are particularly well-suited for this application. I have also intiated a vegetable demonstration garden and hope to get more involved in projects related to urban horticulture.

In the past, I conducted research on postharvest storage and handling of horticultural crops with special emphasis on gas exchange and modified atmosphere storage of fruit and vegetables. For at least 15 years, I was quite active in research centering on flower induction as it relates to production of herbaceous perennial plants.
