This document, adapted to Nigeria’s context, provides detailed guidelines for good hygienic practices (GHP) across the value chains of tomatoes and green leafy vegetables. It highlights measures to minimize microbial, chemical, and physical hazards at all stages of production, handling, transport, and storage. The guidelines draw from international standards such as the Codex Alimentarius and include practical examples tailored to Nigeria’s diverse farming systems.

Key Areas Addressed:

  • Primary Production: Emphasizes site evaluation, use of clean water, and prevention of contamination during planting and irrigation.
  • Handling and Storage: Stresses the importance of proper sanitation, pest control, and avoiding cross-contamination at storage and market facilities.
  • Transportation: Recommends clean, disinfected vehicles and proper packaging to prevent damage and contamination.
  • Hygiene Standards: Outlines procedures for worker hygiene, including the use of protective clothing and routine handwashing.
  • Post-Harvest Practices: Suggests sorting, grading, and cleaning protocols to ensure product safety and quality.

Recommendations:

  1. Provide training for farmers, traders, and transporters on GHP.
  2. Improve infrastructure for water treatment, waste disposal, and storage.
  3. Conduct regular monitoring and testing to ensure compliance with safety standards.
  4. Foster collaboration between government and private sectors for effective policy implementation.

Conclusion:
These guidelines aim to improve the safety and marketability of fresh tomatoes and green leafy vegetables, aligning Nigeria’s agricultural practices with global standards while addressing local challenges. Implementing these measures will enhance public health and boost Nigeria's agricultural economy.
