Manufacturing and Industrialization in Malawi: Trends, Opportunities, and Strategies

October 8, 2020

This paper explores how to invigorate Malawi’s industrial sector growth by examining the causes of the false starts in the past attempts to get the country industrialized and the prospects for an agricultural-led industrialization. Further, we draw on lessons from selected fast-growing economies in sub-Saharan Africa and in East Asia to inform Malawiʼs industrialization strategy and identify obstacles that need to be cleared to facilitate the process.
